Nell Thomas knows that everyone’s story is unique and valuable. She listens. It’s a measured, compassionate quality she’ll bring to her role as Member of Parliament.

Nell’s journey started in humble fashion, the youngest of four children on a small, self-sustaining farm north of Huntsville. Nell’s early education was in a two-room schoolhouse. Her mother was a teacher, her father a broadcaster and politician. Both were environmentalists. “Neither was materialistic.” Nell recounts with fondness being raised “off the land." She grew up recognizing that community, and giving back, were not just important, but our responsibility.” Adulthood found Nell pursuing a career devoted to helping others. Her studies took her to “the city” for a BA in Linguistics at the University of Ottawa, followed by a Masters in Clinical Science at Western University in London.

Fifteen years as a clinical speech pathologist in Muskoka included leading a successful homecare service agency – from her basement! “This meant the local need could be filled by our own community professionals” she says.

Nell made the life-changing decision to attend medical school – at age 39. “I’m glad I waited until then,” she says. “My previous work and life experience have made me a better, more compassionate doctor, and person.”

Her new career could have taken her anywhere, but Nell chose a smaller, rural community where the need for doctors is especially acute. That passion for community and serving others is shared by her husband, Bob Carter, who’s been mayor of Minden since 2022.

Nell’s devotion to community service drives her decision to run for the Liberal Party. “I’m running because of what our country is facing” she says. “This decision isn’t about me. It’s about Canada. It’s about all of us.”
